Gornje Selo

Gornje Selo(Upper Village) is located approximately 7kms southeast of Grohote, on the main east-west road that stretches almost end to end of the island of SOLTA.  The traditional rough stone architecture of Gornje Selo's houses and walled gardens spread out in all directions from this road, as it makes it's sharp turn northwards and then down to end at Stormorska.  This road to Gornje Selo passes stone walled olive and fig tree groves and woods of pine trees that eventually surround the village and it's vineyards, small orchards of almond trees and fields of vegetables.  Just as you travel through other parts of Solta's varied vegetation of woods and scrub lands, you'll be seduced by the scents of wild lavenders, rosemary and pine carried on the ocean breezes.

Gornje Selo, at 170m above sea level, commands un-equalled views of the whole island's geography from its location on high ground, as it lies at the foot of the highest peak on Solta, Vela Straza at 237m above sea level.  (A peak of that same name, but at a lower elevation, also borders the south side of the Sridnje Polje valley). The numerous deep water coves at this eastern end of Solta, including Livka, Travna, Stračinska, Grabova and Senjska are precious natural resources for eco tourism visitors to discover.  Leaving Gornje Selo on crushed rock roads and tracks, through the olive groves, woods and scrub brush, will eventually lead you to them; others are more readily accessible by boat.  Like Donje Selo in the west, Gornje Selo has it's own small "old world" harbor cove, Gornje Krusice - with a few summer homes nestled into the rocky slopes above the clear blue waters of the Adriatic.

During the last century, Gornje Selo's villagers(notably the women) were involved in the production of lime - the result of collecting broken limestone rock and burning it in stone kilns(large round ovens) until it reached a powdered form.  It was exported for later use in concretes and mortars.  The ruins of old kilns still dot the island.  Maybe you'll  be lucky enough to discover a part of one in your travels.  Farmers and fisherman prevail today, working the land and sea.

Not far away from today’s center of Gornje Selo, there is a Starine(ruins of a fortification with two towers dating back to the old antiquity), which was probably the first center of the village. The main road of today’s village goes from the church in the south to the peak of the mount.  Near the cemetery stands the highest peak of the island, Vela Straža, onwhich a large crucifix was built. It can be seen even from as far as the Vis channel.

Gornje Selo is another peaceful and very relaxed village and a great vacation centre for those visitors interested in eco and agri tourism.  It's rural surroundings are perfect for hiking and bike rides under the hot Mediterranean sun with accompanying cool ocean breezes, but remember you're never more than 5 - 10 minutes away from a refreshing swim in the deep blue waters that surround the island of Solta.
