Wine Making
The Greeks introduced wine making to the island of SOLTA in the 4th century BC. Although, in ancient times, wine was not a commercial commodity on the island, it was produced as a money generating revenue centuries ago; to pay for feudal taxes as the islanders in those days were slaves or peasants to the Roman governors. Times have obviously changed! Medical research has always maintained that a glass of wine each day has many beneficial results, but the simple pleasure of a glass of wine accompanying a meal or being used in cooking can add further enjoyment. Locals will drink wine with both lunch and dinner. Many mix the heavier wines with water, locally called "bevenda". Cafe bars also will also serve it in this form upon request.
The grape harvesting season typically begins in October, depending on weather conditions and of course what the summer weather was like in terms of rainfall. You will see on the island of SOLTA that it is still organically grown and harvested in the traditional way where feet still mash the grapes, although older type handpresses are also used as well. There are a small number of actual vineyards throughout the main valley of the island of SOLTA, but almost every household has numerous vines in gardens or grape arbors surrounding their houses. Since local wine production has not yet become a main source of commercial agricultural income, unlike olives, locals grow and harvest it for their own personal use and also sell to local restaurants. The quality of Croatian wine is world renown and you will be able to find some private labels to purchase. See our "Local Products FOR SALE" section.
Chances are, while you are in any of the island restaurants or with your hosts, you will be asked if you would like to taste some locally produced wine, don’t turn it down! Enjoy our tours of winemaking, and if you are here in time for harvest, experience the grape harvest and winemaking. You will leave the island of SOLTA with some great memories and the appreciation for a very good tasting glass of wine.
