Travel Info - Getting to SOLTA - So E-A-S-Y !!
Now that you've discovered the island of SOLTA, just off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea, reviewed all the different articles on the TravelSolta.com website, it's just a simple question of choice on how to get here! It's so EASY!
Unless you choose to arrive directly by private boat, all your travel connections to the island of SOLTA (from wherever you originate) will go through the city of Split, just 16km's or 9 nautical miles away. Split is the UNESCO protected heritage city(surrounding Roman Emperor Diocletian's Palace) that is the capital of the Middle Dalmatian region of Croatia.
Whether you choose to come by road, rail, sea or air, there are multiple options for each method.
By AIR:
Most major world airlines have "code share" flights to Croatia and some arrive directly at the Split Airport. Others have direct flights to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, with connecting flights to Split. The national airline, CROATIA Airlines, has flights to and from most major cities across Europe, year round. Check with your airline of choice. Split Airport is 25kms from the centre of the city of Split
Within Europe, there are also numerous budget air carriers and charter flight companies that service the Split airport with DIRECT flights. These carriers have flights during the main tourist season of May thru September.

For visitors from the USA, there is a unique website www.europebyair.com that will fly you between most major European cities and Split. If it's a DIRECT flight, it costs just $99.00Usd 1 way + airport departure taxes(payable at departure airport). If it's with a connection thru Zagreb, it will cost $198.00USd 1 way + airport departure taxes. Paper Ticket vouchers are purchased and delivered in the USA before departure for Europe. They utilise 20+ regular air carriers, such as CROATIA Airlines. It's a great alternative to the budget airlines if you have other stops on your vacation.
WARNING for U.S. visitors. Baggage allowances and weights on flights within Europe are lower than both domestic and international flights originating in the USA. Excess baggage is charged at approximately 8 Euros($10 Usd) per 1 kilogram(2.2lbs) by most airlines within Europe. In recent times many airlines are also charging fees for checked baggage. Please check in advance.
Ground Transport from SPLIT Airport to the city of SPLIT.
- RENTAL CAR: If you choose to rent a car to use during your visit to the island of SOLTA, there are multiple choices. At the airport there are both international, national and local car rental agencies. Reservations are recommended and should be made prior to your arrival in Croatia. You can also rent from the same agency offices in the centre of Split. Most are based around the "RIVA" area of the harbor. Some local agencies also rent motor scooters. Cars and motor scooters can also be rented on the island of SOLTA, but availability is subject to change or may take a day to organize.
- TAXI: Taxis are available. They are expensive! Cost is approximately 200 Kuna(27 Euros/$38.00Usd) to the harbor in Split. Check and confirm 1st with driver.
- CAR Service: Private Car & Driver service is available. Should be booked through a reputable website. Costs are a little higher. Services should include an airport "greeter" and/or driver.
- BUS: There are 2 choices. 1. The local "Promet" bus lines that stop at EVERY bus stop on the way to Split and sometimes even on the side of the road at the request of locals! Tickets are purchased from the driver. Costs are approximately 30Kuna(4 Euros) per Single 1way ticket for the ride all the way to the centre of Split. Travel time is anywhere from 45 - 90 minutes. Luggage space is very limited! 2. The Croatia Airlines bus/coach service is the better choice.(You do not have to fly with Croatia Airlines to use this servce). It's a far more comfortable coach service with good luggage space below, run by the airline in conjunction with the arrival of it's scheduled flights. The common pickup point is to the far right, as you exit the main terminal. Coaches normally depart approximately 45 minutes after their flight arrivals and take approximately 45 - 60minutes to reach Split. (Sometimes mini busses are used if there are not enough passengers to warrant using the 40 seater coaches). This, in essence, is a DIRECT service to the Harbor area in the centre of Split. Tickets, purchased directly from the driver(most speak some English), cost approximately 35Kuna(5 Euros/$6.50USd) for a Single 1way. These coaches terminate right next to the ticket booths for inter-island "passenger only" ferries. (NOTE: Croatia Airlines also offer a coach service to Split airport, leaving from this point approximately 90 minutes before their scheduled flight departure times - information is available at the Croatia Airlines office located on the "Riva" pedestrian area, 40mtrs away). If you are using a Passenger Only catamaran to complete your trip to the island of SOLTA, purchase your ticket(s) at the ticket booth and it's a very short walk to the quayside boarding point. Make sure you confirm the ferry IS going to Rogac, SOLTA before actually boarding as many different inter island catamarans depart from the same area! If your arrival in Split doesn't coincide with the catamaran timetable, then it's a 1/2 kilometre walk to the main car/passenger ferry terminal. Tickets are purchased in the Jadrolinija Car Ferry Terminal building. Both types of ferry schedules are available online, but use them as a "guide only". Schedules are subject to change according to the time of year. Check with the respective ticket office.
By ROAD:
- via Car and Camper Van etc. With the recent opening of the newly constructed major motorway A1/E71 that runs from the north of Croatia to the ferry port of Split; driving from anywhere in Europe to arrive on the island of SOLTA is now extremely easy. Modern rest/fuel stops are available at convenient intervals of the journey. (Continued construction of this motorway will eventually connect to Dubrovnik at the southern end of Croatia).
- via Coach Service. European bus and coach services do have many direct schedules to Croatia and stop in the city of Split. Most of these arrive and depart from the bus/coach station within the port of Split. It's a 100m walk to the Jadrolinija ferry terminal.
By TRAIN:
Trains within Croatia are relatively modern. Train services from Central Europe run to the capital, Zagreb and connections are available to the city of Split. The train station in Split is conveniently located in the port harbor area and is a 200m walk to the left for the Jadrolinija ferry terminal and to the right for catamaran service.
By BOAT:
Apart from sailing directly to the island of SOLTA, there are international ferry services that arrive in Split, including the hi-speed hydrofoil from Ancona, Italy that takes just 4 hours!
