Ecology
The flora found on the island of SOLTA is of magical value, with its 2000 hectares of unspoiled Mediterranean vegetation, including trees, bushes, shrubs, grasses, medicinal plants and flowers. It lures the eco minded visitor to take a deep breath of the fragrant air and experience ancient “Mediteran”, the cradle of civilization. Apart from the many plants, which flower here 10 months out of the year, a wealth of aromatic plants and species waits to be discovered (rosemary, lavender, mint, thyme, sage, honeysuckle, jasmine). Throughout the centuries the indigenous vegetation was enriched by man who planted olive, fig, almond trees and laid out vineyards and initiated agriculture. In this ecologically pure, biologically priceless atmosphere, vegetation thrives.
Shrubs and trees are dominated by groundsel, feather-grass, ivy, sage and calendula, juniper and pines. Natural weed vegetation can be seen in some areas, whereas in other areas assorted nettle, fruit and wild berry vegetation has developed. On the southern side of the island, where the coastline is very steep and exposed to strong winds, vegetation with deep vertical root systems such as flebane, hair grass and knapweed grow amongst the rock strata. Organically grown vegetables such as cabbage, spinach, kale and different varieties of lettuce, and tomatoes are cultivated. Lemon, orange, mandarin and pomegranate trees together with almond, walnut and carob trees are abundant on the island. Discover over 42(!) varieties of mushrooms, that grow wild, throughout the island of SOLTA.
Unlike many ecological areas where natural vegetation is destroyed, on the island of SOLTA, these areas are protected and allowed to be enjoyed by locals and visitors. The Mediterranean as it used to be.
