Rogac

Unless you sail or arrive by private boat directly into one of the other harbors, the large bays and "picture perfect" harbor port of Rogač will be your 1st introduction to this beautiful island of SOLTA, in the Adriatic.  As you near the quaysides to disembark from "your" vessel, you'll already be smiling, taking in the views of Rogac's immediate scenery, with houses at the edge of pine woods surrounding the main bay, islanders going about their daily lives and other visitors already enjoying their holiday pleasures.

Rogac has always been inhabited from before Roman times, but the majority of islanders (then refugees escaping from the mainland wars) preferred the safety of the island interior, to better defend themselves from pirates and marauders and to farm the land.  Ruins of dating back to Roman rule have been found in Rogac's bays; in Banje with it's pebbled beach, the remains of farm buldings; sea walls in Kasjun and in Zustova a "villa rusticae" containing - a bathroom.

With each docking of a car ferry or smaller catamaran from Split, there's always a "hive of industry" happening harborside in Rogac. (This will be the only "traffic jam" you'll witness on the island of SOLTA!)  Buses and taxis arrive to drop off outbound passengers and wait to fill up again with locals and visitors alike, to then set off for other parts of the island.  Private cars, motor scooters and camper vans and the occasional delivery truck sit waiting to depart as arriving vehicles and passengers offload to be greeted or transported by friends, families or gracious hosts ready to assist with the next step in starting your vacation.  As quickly as the excitement of this "hive of industry" starts, it's over, the boats depart again and everybody resumes the very normal, relaxed lifestyle that is SOLTA.

The road that winds up the hill out of Rogac quickly arrives in Grohote, just 5mins. away, and connects with the main road that runs east-west along the islands length, connecting to all the other villages.  As it crests that large hill, take the opportunity to stop at the WWII War Memorial, look back and marvel in the magnificent views over Rogac's bays and beyond - to Split on the mainland.

If you choose to stay in Rogac in one of the many styles of holiday accommodations available (single rooms, private apartments or holiday houses), you'll never be more than 10 minutes from the sparkling water's edge and only 20 minutes from the ferries - when you finally have to leave.  Exploring the roadway, that curves around the harbor to the opposite shore, you'll reach the cove called Banje and it's pebbled beach with plenty of space to swim from or sunbathe.  As you continue on, you'll pass more stone faced homes nestled amongst the pines, with their scent carried on the sea air, eventually arriving at Pt. Bad and the more isolated homes facing the open sea.  Walking in the other direction, where the car ferry docks, there is no road; just a rock hewn pathway that will lead to the secrets of the uninhabited bay of Kasjun and eventually Pt. Gradina.  We'll leave you to discover large flat rock areas on which to sunbathe and swim from, in this secluded setting with just pine trees, wild rosemary and lavender for company.

The frequent daily car ferry and catamaran sailings to and from Split take between 30mins. approx (for catamarans) and 50mins. approx (for the car ferries).  When the peace and quiet and the rustic panoramas of Rogac and the rest of Solta seem too much to bear; take the quick ferry ride to Split - just for the day.  Immerse yourself in the daily bustle of commerce in the city's large open-air flower, fruit & vegetable and fish markets; a multitude of cafe-bars and restaurants, clothing stalls, boutiques, jewelery stores and internet cafes that surround and fill the alleys and walkways of Roman emperor Diocletian's Palace on the Riva.  Returning by ferry with your purchases, you'll leave the crowds and energy of Split behind and travel back to the relaxed atmosphere of Rogac and all the reasons why you chose the island of SOLTA.

Amenities: Pizzeria, Restaurant, Bakery Stand, Gas Station, Church and Port Authority.
