Grohote
Grohote, probably the oldest and largest village on the island of SOLTA, is the natural and economic center of the island and since 1811 has been the home to it's administration offices. This traditional "old world" village of stone houses, linked by narrow streets and paths, sits at the intersection of the winding road leading up from Rogac(the main ferry port) and the main road, running east-west that links all other villages on Solta.
As the village houses spread out on the northern side of this junction, to the east and west, the centre of Grohote has modern conveniences, but with a twist of that "old world Mediterranean charm". Here you'll find a post office, police and fire stations, a medical clinic with heli-pad, a supermarket, pharmacy and a small outdoor market area with stalls for fresh produce from fields and the sea. All within easy walking distance from each other, together with a bakery, flower shop, various cafe-bars and restaurants, plus the island school and olive oil refinery.
To the south, Grohote overlooks a flat valley namely "Sridnje polje". It is this valley that contains the rich soils that are home to the islands main vineyards and vegetable fields. It runs east west for almost 30% of the islands length. As the terrain rises at each end, it gives way to abundant olive groves and on it's southern side; to the high grounds of Vela Straza with it's pinewood forest. Pheasant, rabbit and hare, even wild boar are hunted in these areas.
The locals are farmers, fisherman and amiable hosts offering accommodations in the village. As with all families on Solta they're also involved with olive harvesting and the production of homemade wines and liqueurs.
Grohote, together with the whole island of Šolta is also famous for its cultural heritage. "Naive art" painters Eugen Buktenica, Dinko Sule and Marin Kalajzic all come from Grohote. Don't miss the opportunity to visit St Stephen's Church, near the fire station. See the wonderful interior decor, the old Christian basilica and other ruins that date this church and Grohote's earliest settlers back to the Christianization of Illyrian - Roman populations on the island in the 5th and 6th ct
