Srednje Selo
On the island of SOLTA, the sleepy rustic village of Srednje Selo (Middle Village) is possibly the most silent! A cockrel crowing or a donkey braying seem to be the only sounds that break the peace and quiet of each day - apart from the church bell striking on the hour. Srednje Selo dates from it's 1st mention in island history in 1535. It's northerly position on higher ground allows it to command a fabulous view over the Sridnje polje (Central field) valley that stretches from east to west. Facing directly south, the old stone houses of Srednje Selo meet the sunrise from the east, bask in the overhead midday sun and enjoy wonderful sunsets from the rural landscape of the western end of SOLTA.
Although connected to the east-west main road of SOLTA, Srednje Selo is also connected to Grohote, to the east, and Donje Selo (Lower Village) to the west by a single lane secondary road; just ten minutes walking in either direction; passing churches, vegetable gardens and olive trees. You'll find twisting lanes and paths in Srednje Selo that will allow you to discover new ways to hike up to the olive groves that dominate the hills behind and enjoy exhilarating walks, wonderful views in all directions and perhaps the perfect spot for a picnc lunch. These villagers, men and women alike, are "multi taskers" combining elements of farming and fishing every day and gathering as families each evening at dinner, a game of bocce(bowels) for the men whilst the womenfolk exchange island gossip and news. As you stroll through the village in the evenings perhaps you'll hear the strains of voices singing old world Folk songs in kitchens and cellars or perhaps a choir at practice. Srednje Selo is in the heart of the agri and eco-tourism areas of SOLTA. Holiday accommodations are available to fit into every visitor's style and budget.
