Donje Selo
Donje Selo(Down Village) is a beautiful and typically rural inland village of stone houses on the island of SOLTA. It is situated on the northwestern edge of the Sridnje polje (Central field) valley, west of Grohote and it's closest neighbor Srednje Selo. On the same single lane secondary road as Srednje Selo, Donje Selo is also linked to the main island road, as it heads to Maslinica at the western end of Solta. The crafted stone houses of Donje Selo are clustered together as they rise up the gently sloping terrain to the top of the village. From here, Donje Krusice, a small cove containing summer homes and the old harbor for Donje Selo, can be reached via an old narrow road that twists down a steep hill to the shoreline. It's well worth the trip to see the unspoilt beauty of this isolated spot. Just beware of the occasional local heading towards you in a car, on foot or riding a donkey!
Donje Selo is surrounded by sprawling pastures, fields and large olive groves that attract all kinds of wildlife. This village and general area are great for hunting, agri tourism and eco tourism. Just like Srednje Selo, this rustic village of Donje Selo is very peaceful except for the sounds of nature and the ever present bells from the local church. Except for the ruins of a prehistoric fortified building on the Gradine(higher ground above the village), the only other traces of the early settlement of Donje Selo are found in the remains of foundation walls and a mosaic floor of a rectangular building from an ancient Christian period under the Church of St. Jela.
